The Sports Centre in Basingstoke are looking forward to the “Get Active Week”, and hoping to see more of our local community visiting our fantastic facilities.

All week we will be offering FREE activities for adults (16 years plus), which will allow you to try us out. These include Badminton, Swimming, Line Dancing, Pilates, Yoga, Swimming, Aquafit, racket sports and gym workouts.

The benefits of keeping active are well documented: Regular exercise can reduce high blood pressure, aid weight loss, increase mobility and strength all of which can improve quality of life,

Brian Rolfe is one of our members who at 66 years of age joined our gym and has lost over a stone and a half, as well as reducing his blood pressure.

"Coming to the Sports Centre has changed my life, I feel supported by the staff who are so helpful and approachable. My health has improved and as a result of that I can enjoy my retirement with my wife, who is also now a member, so we train together four times a week"

Another of our members Gordon James took up rowing when he retired and is now 81 years old and comes to the gym 3 – 4 times a week. Remarkably he won a gold medal last year at the Indoor World Concept 2 Rowing challenge. "You have got to keep fit. I never really had the time until I retired and came to the Sports Centre"

Basingstoke Sports & Social Club in conjunction with Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council and the Local Sports Council and the 'Get Active' initiative will be hosting open evenings at May's Bounty on Wednesday 9th & Thursday 10th July.

This is an opportunity for those of you who are not familiar with the Club to come along and see what we have to offer.

As well as running 'taster' junior cricket coaching sessions each evening from 6pm for girls and boys (school years 3&4/9&10 on Wednesday, school years 5&6/7&8 on Thursday) led by qualified ECB coaches there will also be a variety of Club Members on hand to explain what our Sports & Social Club has to offer both young and old alike, be it actively participating in one of the sports we host or to discuss the purely social side of our activities.

Additionally, we are continually looking for enthusiasts of all ages to become involved in coaching or coach support in our junior setup so if you are keen to work with young people we may have the opportunities for you.

If you are getting close to retirement or simply looking to find a pastime that exercises both mind and body then again we would be interested in talking to you. We are always on the lookout for new Umpires & Scorers to join our junior and senior teams as they travel locally around Hampshire visiting some scenic & tranquil cricket grounds. Don't be put off just because you have no Cricketing or Sporting background. Anyone who enjoys numbers can learn the basics and then it's just a matter of how in depth you want to take it.

We are also looking for volunteers with general admin skills to help manage our junior and senior teams so if you are just looking to combine a relaxing few hours in a friendly atmosphere with an hour a week on the computer helping to organise matches, meetings & social events then come along and see what we can mutually arrange.

If you are a junior and want to join in the coaching sessions please contact Jon Bennett by email at bnhcc_coaching@btinternet.com. And if you simply want to chat about becoming a member or getting involved in some of the roles described above just come along to the main Clubhouse at May's Bounty from 5:30pm on the 9th & 10th of July and ask about 'Get Active' at the Bar.
