About Us

The purpose of establishing a Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) in Basingstoke and Deane is to provide a simplified, joined up approach for the delivery of sport and active recreation across the borough. The Government has set a national target to increase the number of people taking part in sport and active recreation in England by 1% annually. To achieve this target and other priorities there is a need for relevant partners to work more closely together, sharing effort and resources, to increase levels of participation.

The national Active People survey identified that currently 26% of people in Basingstoke and Deane take part in the recommended 5 x 30 minutes of active recreation per week. Although this places Basingstoke and Deane in the top quartile for participation across Hampshire it is still well below the 70% national target.

The Basingstoke and Deane SPAA has brought together local partners from a range of sectors to deliver common priorities based on the needs of the local community. Many local priorities have already been identified through the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), Community Plan and Council Plan. The SPAA will provide a mechanism to deliver these local priorities for sport and physical activity across the borough.

The SPAA is chaired by Mark Jones, current editor of the Basingstoke Gazette and includes membership from the following organisations and associations within the borough:

  • Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
